What’s going on this week

Design twitter always seems to have something to discuss (though most of the time, it’s nothing of any great consequence…), and this week is no exception.

Thanks for being here, let’s get into the sauce 🥫

Introducing... the AI Pin

Imran and Bethany want to promise you a new type of computing at $699 + $24/mo for the companion app. The [demo] was Apple-inspired but lacked the enthusiasm of Apple launches. The product on the other hand, packs some interesting features.

What does this mean?

The ai pin comes with a magnetic battery booster. You can swap out battery packs and have what Humane calls “perpetual battery life”. There are no wake words or always on recordings. Most interactions start with a touch (or two). Privacy is handled by an on-off LED that makes the device stop if you tamper with it.

The ai pin gives you an alternative for everything you use your phone while putting the device in the background. You can make calls, find and play unique music, take photos etc.

Except apps. Instead of apps it gives you AI experiences that run in the cloud. The “catch me up” feature gets you summaries for messages. There’s live translation to talk in any language, AI assisted search to find anything, etc. All the AI is, again, powered by OpenAI models. The gesture controls are cool but you have to keep the hand so that the laser ink can project on it. More use cases and gesture details on the website.

OpenAI is introducing Data Partnerships

...to work with organizations to produce public and private datasets for training AI models. It wants to broaden the training data for AI to cover more subjects, industries, cultures and languages so models can better understand and serve all of humanity.

Anthropic will utilize Google's new TPU v5e chips

...to boost the performance of its Claude natural language model. The company is also reportedly committing to spending $$s on Google Cloud, even after some questionable rival partnerships.

Scale AI is unveiling a new research initiative

Scale is ramping up investments in advanced red teaming and evaluation methods to enhance transparency and standardization around LLM safety.

What does this mean?

Currently, each AI company establishes safety guidelines in-house, which can be inefficient and overlook key risks. Scale plans to collaborate with regulators and the AI community to develop comprehensive LLM safety evaluation products and benchmarks applicable across the industry. This aims to mitigate common safety risks outlined in the executive order on AI, like cybersecurity and deceptive content. The SEAL team will conduct research to improve evaluation reliability, apply red teaming techniques, and develop LLM-based automated rating systems.

Why should I care?

Standardized safety benchmarks will increase accountability and transparency for companies deploying LLMs. More rigorous evaluation methods can help identify and mitigate risks early. As AI becomes deeply integrated into products and services, consumers need assurance LLMs align with ethical principles. More open collaboration on safety practices will also accelerate AI progress responsibly.
